私の地元の線区でも普通列車から貨物、夜行急行と運用についていたらしいのですが、自分が物心ついたころにはDD51牽引に変わっていました。DD54が入る前はC11だのC57だのが入っていたらしいです。
しかしこれ、めちゃくちゃ格好いいですねぇ。

わたしはDD54は廃車体しか見たことないので、そのドイツ製ライセンス生産のマイバッハV型16気筒がどんな音だったのか知らんのですが、音の問題というよりは、その後の日本のDLがほとんど凸型になっちゃったので、箱形DLはかっこいいなあ、という「箱形コンプレックス」があるような。。。あ、最近のJR貨物のはまた箱形になってるなあ。

たしか旧国鉄時代1970年頃にドイツ製のをライセンス生産したDLがありましたよね。
DD54だっけ？あれ、かっこよかったなぁ。DBの匂いプンプンだった。
